Step 2: Introduction Video  📘

Progress: checking...

Learn about measles and how the immune system fights off viruses using memory cells to create antibodies. Measles survivors tend to get sick more often after recovering and researchers wanted to know why.

Today we’re going to be talking about a pathogen that’s very dangerous and that’s measles. So let’s all get on the same page with a short introduction. So measles is dangerous because it’s really contagious and any kind of complications can actually be fatal. In fact it’s a major cause of death in kids and about 140,000 people died from measles in 2018 just to give you an idea. Now we have a problem and that’s that less people are getting vaccinated. An additional problem we have is that survivors, so that means people that have gotten measles and recovered are often more sick in the time after their measles infection. They get sick with other diseases. So just a quick aside, our immune system when we get sick makes antibodies that can recognize pathogens. It’s basically like a memory system so that if the person gets sick again with the same pathogen, those antibodies can recognize it and you don’t get as sick or get better faster. So thinking about the fact that our measles survivors are more sick after they get infected and recovered, researchers wondered if measles actually decreased our immune memory.
