About This Video
Discover what the harmful effects of vaping mean for human health in the future. Vaping can potentially lead to cancer and changes in the microbiome of the mouth. Unfortunately, many of the effects of vaping are long term and we won’t be seeing their full impact for many decades.
Transcript
Let’s discuss what these findings mean. First, I think it’s quite clear that vaping is dangerous. It causes inflammation and DNA damage that can be linked to cancer formation in the long-term.
Vaping also causes changes in the microbiome of the mouth, resulting in bad breath and inflammation. Vaping can prevent the good bacteria in your mouth from growing and promote the growth of bad bacteria. In fact some bad bacteria thrive on sugary substances, which is why sweet flavored aerosols had worse outcomes, such as diseases like periodontitis.
Unfortunately we don’t know much about the long-term impacts of vaping and exactly how much damage it can cause. This is because e-cigarettes have only been on the market for about 15 years. Things like inflammation and DNA damage, we know, can cause cancer in the long-term. So we are likely to see an increase in cancers related to vaping in the coming years. This also means that many people, especially teens, are at risk for developing cancers that are entirely preventable.
